Communication Skills
Communication Skills 1
The purpose of this unit is to assist
students in their ability to successfully interact,
participate and communicate effectively in an academic
environment. Students will leårn basic study skills of time
management, listening and note taking.
Emphasis will be placed on how to
write and structure paragraphs and essays. The use of the
various types of logical orders of information and patterns
of organisation will be studied. The importance of
documenting sources of information using recognised research
and referencing skills to provide concrete support for
arguments made when writing will also be investigated.
Using their knowledge of and the
correct use of conventions in the English language, students
will also be required to conduct an oral presentation in a
team before other class members.
Communication Skills 2
This unit assists students to acquire
the necessary skills to operate successfully in a tertiary
and professional environment.
Introduction to Computing
The aim of this unit is understand and
become proficient is using common business application
software such as MS PowerPoint™, MS Word™, MS Excel™ and MS
Access™. These core business applications are an important
part of the unit and students will need to meet the minimum
assessment criteria in these areas to receive a passing
grade. This unit also introduces and aims to develop
understanding of the computer system, components of a
computer system, hardware, software and information
processing.
Programming
This unit provides an introduction to fundamental concepts
and techniques of computer programming via a Graphical User
Interface. Students learn to solve problems by writing
programs in an event-driven, high-level language (Visual
Basic). Important ideas include problem solving, good
programming design and data abstraction.
Information Design
The purpose of this unit is an
overview of the theory and application of designing
information for a range of purposes and in a range of media,
particularly in relation to: Paper-based media and
Electronic media. Students will learn to use software tools
to both create and view information designed for different
media.
Mathematics
Advanced Mathematics I
Students
will receive a thorough revision of Real Numbers and
Algebra, will be given a broader knowledge of Geometry,
Trigonometry andFunctions, and will be provided with the
necessary background knowledge of Differential
Calculus
so that they, after satisfactory completion of this unit,
can pursue the unit Advanced Mathematics II. Together with
the Advanced Mathematics II, students will have obtained a
good coverage of some Calculus concepts to be used in
further studies.
Advanced Mathematics II
This is a Mathematics module
specifically for students who wish to study Engineering,
Physical Sciences, Mathematics or related courses at a
tertiary level. Successful completion of this module
indicates that students have obtained a good understanding
of integral calculus so that further studies in calculus and
related topics can be undertaken. This module together with
MTH001 will give students a thorough knowledge of Calculus
to proceed to tertiary studies in the more scientifically
orientated courses.
Statistics
This module is concerned
with developing statistical concepts. It develops the
skills and knowledge required to collect and present
numerical data and is concerned with the analysis and
interpretation of this numerical data
Accounting
This unit
introduces students to the nature of accounting, the basic
concepts, underlying principles and the process of recording
financial information. Background, profit motive,
service/trading organisations, types of ownership – sole
trader/partnership/company, accounting principles,
assumptions, doctrines – accounting entity/monetary/
historical cost/ continuity of activity (going concern)/
period, aim of accounting standards, sources of finance for
sole trader, users of financial information.
Marketing
This unit
aims to provide students with an understanding of important
marketing principles and concepts in an increasingly
competitive marketing environment. It embraces the changes
that are unfolding for the marketing student and provides a
thorough understanding of contemporary marketing and how it
fits into our dynamic world, both domestically and globally.
Economics
This module introduces to the nature of
economic principles in preparation for more detailed studies
at university level. Topics covered include the nature of
economics, market economy, price mechanisms, the Australian
financial system, the stock market, the firm, production
costs, pricing policy, perfect and imperfect markets.
Management
Introduction to Management
This is a Business module specifically
for students who wish to study commerce/management and
related courses at a tertiary level. Successful completion
of this module indicates that students have obtained an
introductory understanding of the principles and practices
related to management in the modern world.
PhysicsPhysics
II
The
course is intended to:
inspire an inquisitive attitude to the
natural world, consolidate the understanding of the
fundamental mechanical concepts and principles of Physics,
extend students ability to solve problems of both a
qualitative and quantitative nature, develop students use of
the language and conventions of Physics to communicate
information effectively.
Physics III
This module is designed to expose
students to the basic principles of Physics, and their
applications, within a wide variety of contexts.
Through the development of knowledge
of the basic principles of physics, students will be able to
explain many natural phenomena. It will also enable them to
apply these phenomena in technologies that are important to
modern day society.
Physics principles & methods
applicable to Electromagnetism, Optics and Atomic Physics
are covered in this module. The partner module PHY002 covers
the topics of Heat, Motion and Wave Energy.
Chemistry
This course introduces students to the
study of matter and its interactions thereby providing a
link with other branches of natural science. The course is
designed to assist students to appreciate the impact of
chemical knowledge and technology on society. This Chemistry
module is designed for students who wish to study physical
sciences or health sciences at a tertiary level. |
